Horses vs. Homeowners

The battle between Scottsdale's past and its present are heating up. The fight isn't over but the homeowners have a serious advantage - their property taxes. City officials are rightfully hesitant to upset one of the major apple carts that funds city services.

Birkett Leaves, Maturity Wins

Chris Birkett will have a holiday display this year bigger and louder than his 2004 setup. Thankfully, it won't be in Scottsdale. Birkett's production in itself is not terribly offensive, but it did create a nuisance in his neighborhood. Besides, with the display now a commercial venture Birkett can let the free market - and free publicity - work in his favor.

101 Cameras Good for Scottsdale

Despite this ridiculous column by a state senator from Phoenix, installing cameras to catch speeders on 101 in Scottsdale is a reasonable, appropriate response to an out-of-control problem.

More Homes, Less Mountains?

Scottsdale has been a leader in balancing growth along with sustainability and quality-of-life. A new plan to build more houses in McDowell Mountain Ranch could upset that balance and send Scottsdale in the wrong direction. The city council will take up the issue in 2 weeks.

Scottsdale - Home of the Tacky Displays

Here is a two-for-one from the tacky displays category. First, Scottsdale's massive American flag, erected by the city without the proper permits. Second, Chris Birkett and his over-hyped holiday displays. I'm sure a trifecta of self-serving, illegal displays is an inevitable part of our future. Where is Henry Becker when we need him?

Scottsdale Real Estate Market Heating Up for Buyers

Evidence abounds that the once red-hot national real estate market is beginning to slow down. Signs are now popping up around town that indicate Scottsdale's white-hot market may also be slowing. Open house signs.

This very normal part of the real estate transaction is once again flourishing in Scottsdale. On an afternoon drive today through central Scottsdale open house signs were literally posted on every corner. There were plenty of lookers - including myself - but apparently not quite as many buyers as there were even 3-6 months ago.

Scottsdale property values will continue to be among the highest in the state. That is a reflection of the excellent quality-of-life here. However, home owners used to ballooning real estate prices should prepare for what is clearly becoming a buyer's market.

Lowe's Opening in South Scottsdale

The city's south side will get a welcome addition late next year: a new Lowe's store. It's great to see retail business settling (once again) into the area. But, big-box boosters should hesitate before cheering too loudly just yet. The area is still in need of more visible police patrols, locally-owned businesses and, in some places, drastic neighborhood revitalization.
